Athletics Need to Pick Up The Pieces

by @ Friday, September 21st, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

The Athletics season is winding down and unless they win out, it’ll be their first sub-.500 season since 1998.  You wonder if Billy Beane is losing it.  I’d still rather have him in there then anyone but with the whole Moneyball thing, it’s like everyone is on to us and it’s had somewhat of an […]

Athletics Can’t Afford Many More Losses In Second Half

by @ Saturday, July 14th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

The Athletics have started off their second half of the season with two more losses and that brings their losing streak to five games.  They’re now eleven back of the Angels in the loss column and nine back of the Mariners in the loss column and if the Athletics don’t start winning soon, even one […]

Rich Harden Comes Back and the Athletics End Their Skid

by @ Thursday, June 28th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

The Athletics ended their five game losing streak last night with a nice offensive performance over the Indians.  The score was 9-0 by the second inning and Jack Cust belted his thirteenth homerun and he drove in five in the win.   Six players had multihit games and all nine regulars got at least one hit […]

Dan Haren Wins Again, Athletics Keeping Head at Water Level in Division

by @ Thursday, June 21st, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

I have to say, I never expected Dan Haren would be this good for this long of time.  I always thought he’d be a decent pitcher but he’s been nothing short of phenomonal this year.  Probably his most impressive number is how he’s simply dominated left handed pitching despite throwing from the right side.  He’s […]

Athletics Gaining Ground and Bobby Crosby

by @ Wednesday, June 13th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

The A’s have been rolling.  Unfortunately, the Mariners have been the hottest team in baseball and the Angels haven’t been too shabby either.  So despite winning eight of ten, the A’s have actually lost ground on the Mariners and picked up just one game on the Angels.  Still, there’s a lot of games to be played […]

More Jack Cust

by @ Sunday, May 20th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

I still owe you a Jack Cust profile but in the meantime, he warranted a mention in this Baseball Prospectus column.

Athletics Keep Pace In AL West

by @ Thursday, May 17th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

It’s hard to believe it’s been three weeks.  Baseball Historians had some system wide problems that prevented me from posting but not a whole lot has changed during that time.  The A’s now hover a game above .500 and they sit tied with the Mariners and just two games back of the Angels.  Not ideal, […]

Athletics Slip Back to .500 With Two Losses to Mariners

by @ Thursday, April 26th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

I have a feeling this is going to be one of those weird seasons.  The A’s lost two to the Mariners and fell from their perch.  And to add insult to injury, they’re not back to .500.  That’s what happens when you don’t get any offense.
And yesterday, the A’s got no offense.  A great start […]

Athletics Take Two in Baltimore

by @ Tuesday, April 24th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

These little two game road series are a pain but I’ll take this one because they rolled into Baltimore and took two against the Orioles.  In yesterday’s game, the A’s jumped all over Erik Bedard for five runs in the fourth inning and while the pen let the Orioles back into the game, the Athletics […]

Athletics Sit In First Place Despite Series Loss to Rangers

by @ Monday, April 23rd, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

The AL West is pretty crazy so far.  The A’s sit at 9-9, yet they’re tied for first place with the Angels.  Not that long ago, the Mariners were first and now they’re in last, but they’re just two games back of first.  Got it?  To sum it up, things are tight and so far, […]

Athletics Win Two Over Angels, Put Together Three Game Winning Streak

by @ Wednesday, April 18th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

Man, the Angels are looking pathetic right now.  The A’s dismantled them in a two game series and the pitchers held them to just a single run in two games.  More importantly, the A’s have now popped their head above the .500 mark and they now sit at 8-7, in a virtual tie for first […]

Athletics Win Battle of One Run Games Against Yankees

by @ Monday, April 16th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

It came down to the final at bat of yesterday’s game but the A’s walked away with the series win over the Yankees.  All three games were decided by a single run with the A’s coming out on top in two of those three.
In Friday’s game, the A’s came back from a 5-2 deficit to […]

Lack of Offense Costs Athletics in Series Against White Sox

by @ Wednesday, April 11th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

Six runs in three games isn’t going to cut it and it’s probably fortunate that the A’s walked away with one of their three games against the White Sox.  The pitching was mostly there, this team just has to get the hitting going.
Monday was the worst game at the plate.  The A’s racked up just a […]

Athletics Salvage Split of Four Game Series With Angels

by @ Monday, April 9th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

I guess this could have been a lot worse.  The A’s won their series opener with the Angels when Mike Piazza drove in the winning run with a solo shot in the ninth inning.  Chad Gaudin threw five solid frames but he didn’t get a decision and also give some props to the pen.  Other […]

Rich Harden Pitches A’s to First Win of the Season

by @ Thursday, April 5th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

What an outing by Rich Harden.  This is what we’ve  been waiting for from the ace this season and he delivered with seven innings of shutout ball.  He gave up just three hits and two walks and he struck out seven.  And the end result is the A’s first win of the season.
The Athletics also […]

Pitching Fails A’s in Loss to Mariners

by @ Wednesday, April 4th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

Well, this isn’t good.  Joe Blanton and Kiko Colero gave up a combined seven runs in 6 1/3 innings as the A’s dropped their second straight game.  At the plate, Milton Bradley hit a solo homerun and Mark Ellis drove in two but when the pitching is this bad, four runs isn’t going to cut […]

One Bad Inning For Danny Haren Costs A’s in Season Opener

by @ Monday, April 2nd, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

An error by Bobby Crosby and a three run homerun by Richie Sexson turned what could have been a good start into a 4-0 loss.  The final line on Haren was that he gave up four unearned runs on only four hits in six innings of work.
The A’s couldn’t touch Felix Hernandez today.  When you […]

Danny Haren Looks Sharp in A’s Loss to Angels

by @ Wednesday, March 28th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

The A’s were shut down today in a 2-0 loss to the Angels.  All four A’s hits were singles in what was a complete shut down.
The good news is, Danny Haren had a nice start for the A’s.  He lasted only 4 1/3 innings, but he gave up just one run on six hits with three strikeouts […]

Rich Harden Looking Fine This Spring

by @ Thursday, March 22nd, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

Tim Brown at Yahoo recently talked about how good of a spring Rich Harden is having.  Of course we all know the young starter has had his share of injuries the past couple of years and now with Barry Zito gone, guys like Harden have to step up if the A’s are going to win […]

Rich Harden Strikes Out Seven in Strong Spring Outing

by @ Tuesday, March 20th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

Rich Harden was at his best this spring as he pitched five solid innings today against the White Sox.  He struck out seven and he gave up only a single run on five hits and two walks.
Lou Merloni and Marco Scutaro provided most of the offense for the A’s today.  Merloni hit his first homerun […]

Rich Harden’s Mechanics

by @ Thursday, March 15th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

In a very cool column, Hardball Times columnist Carlos Gomez takes a look at Rich Harden’s mechanics.  You get video and everything and there’s a lot of good stuff here.

Bobby Crosby and Rich Harden

by @ Wednesday, March 14th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

There’s no doubt that having a healthy Bobby Crosby and Rich Harden would go a long way towards the A’s repeating their AL West title in 2007.  In a recent article by Jerry Crasnick, he runs down all of the injuries the A’s had and then profiles Rich Harden and Bobby Crosby because they’ve missed […]

Oakland Athletics Minor League Organizational Preview

by @ Tuesday, March 13th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

In an ongoing series at MiLB.com, Lisa Winston takes a look at the Athletic’s minor league system.  She touches on how deep the A’s system is and there are a couple of profiles on players who are expected to play at each of the minor league levels.  There’s info. on Travis Buck, Marcus McBeth and she […]

Another Athletics Season Preview

by @ Monday, March 12th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

The Hardball Times kicked off their season preview series today with a look at a couple of AL West teams.  Sal Baxamusa, who did a great job of covering the A’s during the playoffs for the website, took on the five main questions that the A’s have going into the season.  He touches on everything […]

Mark Kotsay to Miss Three Months With Back Injury

by @ Thursday, March 8th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

The Athletics now have a hole in their outfield because Mark Kotsay is out for at up to three months after he has his back surgery.  Kotsay was more like a fourth outfielder plus last year.  Kotsay hasn’t quit picked things up since his last solid year in 2004.  It looks like Milton Bradley will shift back […]

Athletics Offense Held in Check in Spring Loss to Royals

by @ Wednesday, March 7th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

The A’s were held to two runs on five hits yesterday in their second spring loss of the season.  Mike Piazza had an RBI double and that was the only extra base hit for the team.  He then got hit on his left elbow for his troubles and his status is uncertain.  Even more troubling, […]

Bobby Kielty and Eric Chavez

by @ Wednesday, February 28th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

Bobby Kielty is going to have knee surgery and he’ll be out anywhere from three to six weeks.  Kielty is one of those guys I just keep waiting to for to have a breakout season but it’s never quite worked now.  Now his season is already off to a rough start.  Mark Kotsay is also […]

Hoping the A’s Get it Done in 2007

by @ Tuesday, February 27th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

Christina Kahrl recently took a look at the A’s chances in 2007, running down some of the things that could go wrong and the positives surrounding the ball club.  It’s a very nice “half glass full” look at the team and while I think the A’s can get it done and win the AL West, […]

Chad Gaudin Profile

by @ Friday, February 23rd, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

This is a nice profile on A’s reliever Chad Gaudin.  While PECOTA expects Gaudin to take a step back in 2007, having a solid Gaudin in there as another option coming out of the pen will go along way towards a repeat of the AL West title in 2007.

Rich Harden in the News

by @ Saturday, February 17th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Athletics

Buster Olney recently listed five pitchers in a blog post that he thinks could have a huge impact on the team and Rich Harden comes in at number two.  He talks about Harden’s injury problems and that with Zito gone, Harden is now the number one guy.
Also, John Sickels posted the results of a community […]
