Padres Come From Behind to Beat Giants

by @ Thursday, April 5th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

Matt Cain looked pretty sharp for the Giants but the Padres finally got to him in the fifth inning with homeruns by Khalil Greene and Marcus Giles.  The Giants tied the game back up but the in the top of the eighth, Adrian Gonzalez went yard for a two run shot to give the Padres […]

Jake Peavy Rocks Giants in Season Opening Win

by @ Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

Alright, the Padres got win number one under their belt and they did it with some nifty pitching.  Jake Peavy led the way and he threw six shutout innings with six strikeouts and then Cla Meredith and Heath Bell combined for three scoreless innings to close the game out.
At the plate, Josh Bard had a […]

Padres Give Adrian Gonzalez a Four Extension

by @ Monday, April 2nd, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

The Padres signed first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to a four year, $19.5 million contract extension yesterday.  While not your prototypical slugging first baseman, Gonzalez is a patient hitter who had a solid .304 batting average.  Twenty four homeruns when you play half of you games at Petco isn’t too shabby.  My only concern is he’s […]

Padres Score 24 in Win Over Rangers

by @ Tuesday, March 27th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

Talk about a beat down.  The Padres beat the Rangers 24-7 today and racked up 25 hits.  Russell Branyan had a game fit for a video game. He went four for six with two homeruns, five RBIs and four runs.  Adrian Gonzalez also homered as did Kazmar.  There was a lot of offense in this […]

Padres Score Ten in Win Over Giants

by @ Monday, March 26th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

The Padres got their bats going yesterday and they ran up the score in a 10-7 win.  They scored eight runs in the third inning alone.  Adrian Gonzalez had a big day at the plate.  He went two for four with his fourth spring homerun and he drove in three runs.  Khalil Greene also hit […]

Padres 2007 Preview

by @ Sunday, March 25th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

Marc Normandin previewed the Padres today over at Baseball Prospectus.  As always, it’s a more sabermetric look but it’s also balanced as well.  He talks about some of the young guns like Kevin Kouzmanoff, who should be an upgrade for the Padres at third base.  He also talks about the Padres strong bench as well […]

Padres Five Questions

by @ Thursday, March 22nd, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

Geoff Young reviewed the Padres over at the Hardball Times today in their five question format.  He touches on everything from Bud Black as a manager to Josh Bard as a starting catcher.  He finishes up with a look at whether the older fellas in the rotation, David Wells and Greg Maddux, can have an […]

Padres Minor League Preview

by @ Tuesday, March 20th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

MiLB.com recently previewed the Padres minor league system.  There’s profiles on players at each level of the Padres minor league system, including Cesar Carrillo and Luis Cruz.  They also recap the 2006 draft as well as predict that the best players in the Padres minor league system will be Cedric Hunter and Cesar Carrillo.  This […]

Kevin Kouzmanoff Profile

by @ Thursday, March 15th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

John Maffei at Baseball America recently profiled Kevin Kouzmanoff.  There’s some quotes from Kevin Towers about why the Padres pulled the trigger and sent Josh Barfield to Cleveland for Kouzmanoff and it touches on how the Padres have some pretty high hopes for the rookie as the starting third baseman.

Ducksnorts 2007 Baseball Annual

by @ Wednesday, March 14th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

My favorite Padres blog, Ducksnorts, recently put out a 2007 Baseball Annual.  Looks like you can go hardcopy or download with the download being less then $10 bucks.  Looks like a solid bargain at close to 200 words.

Greg Maddux Misses Spring Start With Abdominal Strain

by @ Tuesday, March 13th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

Greg Maddux misses his spring start yesterday against the White Sox because of a mild lower abdominal strain.  Bud Black indicated that he would have thrown had it been the regular season so it can’t be too serious.
Tim Stauffer ended up picking up the start and he threw three shutout frames although he hardly coasted […]

Padres Spring Win a Team Effort

by @ Wednesday, March 7th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

The Padres beat the Diamondbacks yesterday in a 5-3 win and it was truly a team effort.  All eight hits came by different Padres while all five runs and all five RBIs were by different Padres as well.
Chris Young had a decent start. He gave up a solo homerun to Jerry Hairston but he struck […]

Bullpen Battle in Full Swing

by @ Wednesday, February 28th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

Right now, Bud Black isn’t saying how many pitchers he’ll be keeping when the Padres break camp but he’s hinted it may be as many as twelve.  The next question is, which 12 pitchers will make it.  This MLB article goes through all of the candidates but you has as many as 20 guys vying […]

Padres Top Ten Prospects

by @ Wednesday, February 21st, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

Baseball America recently unveiled their list of the top ten Padres prospects.  Coming in at number one is outfielder Cedric Hunter, who was chosen in the third round of the 2006 draft.  Hunter had a solid season playing rookie ball and he should take the next step and play at Low A in 2007.
Number two […]

Greg Maddux Makes Padre Debut

by @ Saturday, February 17th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

Greg Maddux threw for the first time in Padres uniform in today’s workout.  It sure would be nice if the Padres helped Maddux win 17 in 2007, which would push him to 350 career wins.
In other odds and ends, here’s a nice profile of Padres outfielder Terrmel Sledge and how he’s looking to win the […]

Greg Maddux - Value Play

by @ Saturday, February 10th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

The Padres will probably live and die by their starting rotation in 2007.  They have some other nice parts, but the strength of this team is the front end pitching.  And none of these pitchers, including Jake Peavy, could have more of an impact on how well the team does then future Hall of Famer […]

Jake Peavy Analysis

by @ Tuesday, February 6th, 2007. Filed under Jake Peavy, 2007 Padres

Geoff Young from Ducksnorts takes a great look at Jake Peavy at the Hardball Times.   It’s got  comparables, stats, and what the future might hold for the Padres ace.

Preseason Padres Preview

by @ Tuesday, February 6th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

Solid pitching and mediocre hitting is what seems to define the San Diego Padres.  No Padre has hit more then 25 homeruns in a season in the past two years depite the team walking away with two division titles.  As this Padres preseason preview discusses in more detail, 2007 will be more of the same.
There’s […]

Aaron Rowand Trade Talks Put on Hold

by @ Wednesday, January 31st, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

I picked this up at ESPN.com’s baseball rumor page, but it looks like a proposed deal that would have brought Aaron Rowand to Padres was put on hold.  The Padres looked like they were looking to send relief pitcher Scott Linebrick in exchange for Rowand.
Normally, I’d be all for sending a relief pitcher for a […]

The Padres Poor Farm System

by @ Saturday, January 27th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Padres

This isn’t good to read, but it’s not a huge surprise either.  Keith Law at ESPN.com recently wrote an article about how much the Yankees farm system has improved.  In the sidebar, the mentions that the worst farm system probably goes to, gulp, the Padres.  They passed up a ton of talent in 2004 and […]

Jake Peavy and PECOTA

by @ Friday, January 26th, 2007. Filed under Jake Peavy, 2007 Padres

Late January is a pretty fun time of year.  Spring training is on the horizon and the hot stove is winding down so most teams know what they have.  And it’s also the time that Baseball Prospectus puts out their PECOTA cards, which are really fun to check out.  It’s just one of the things […]
