R.I.P. McLaren’s Seattle career

by @ Thursday, June 19th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

  Charlie Riedel/AP
Leave it to the Mariners to lose, even on a day off. At least this time it’s addition by subtraction.
Yes, everyone’s favorite Mike Martz look-alike, John McLaren, was finally put out of his misery and fired Thursday morning during a travel day for the Tacoma Rainers’ Major League affiliate.
I only hope interim GM […]

At least they’re consistent

by @ Thursday, June 19th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

Following yet another loss, this time 5-2 to the Marlines, I’m sure members of the Tacoma Rainers’ Major League affiliate probably wanted to be put out of their misery.
I don’t blame them. I want to be put out of my misery and I just watch the team.

The Blue Jays’ talent apparently went on strike

by @ Thursday, June 12th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

The American dollar is currently worth just 98 cents in Canada, using a four percent cash rate. You may or may not know what that means (I sure don’t) but all you need to understand is that the American dollar is worth less across the border.
Thankfully, for the Tacoma Rainers Major League affiliate, the same […]

If only all their games were on Saturday mornings

by @ Wednesday, June 4th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

The Tacoma Rainers’ Major League affiliate has managed to make this season as entertaining as a Wile Coyote cartoon. Each day we’re all wondering just how this team is going to lose in the end. Will they smash into a painted wall? Or have an anvil fall on their collective heads? No, this team is […]

This man is not so intimidating anymore

by @ Monday, June 2nd, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

I felt a little under the weather over the weekend so I decided to take a mental break, recharge my batteries and come back to hit the ground running. While I was gone the Mariners played .500 baseball, going 2-2 in my absence. Hmmmmm. Maybe I should take more breaks.
Regardless, after missing out on a […]

Mariners win … Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

by @ Wednesday, May 28th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

Rod Mar/THE SEATTLE TIMES
This week’s Sports Illustrated cover is about baseball’s bizarro world. On Tuesday night Safeco Field was its own bizzaro world.
An 8-0 Daisuke Matsuzaka was going up against a who-care-what-his-record-is-because-its-bad Miguel Bautista. Yet, when the dust settled it was the Mariners who came out on top, 4-3 over the Red Sox. In the […]

This team hit the wall long before Ichiro did

by @ Tuesday, May 27th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

I hoped it would never come to this, but the Mariners have left me no other choice. Thanks to a 5-3 loss to the Red Sox (the team’s seventh straight) Seattle fell to 16 games below .500 and I have a strict rule that once a team falls under 15 games below .500 they can […]

Bavasi speaks up

by @ Sunday, May 25th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

There isn’t much to say about Saturday afternoon’s game. The Mariners sucked … again. Seattle fell to the Yankees 12-6 to extend its losing streak to five.
Not only is it a five-game losing streak, it’s a five-game losing streak to two teams that began the week dead last in their division. It’s also five straight […]

Coming up empty handed … again … and again

by @ Friday, May 23rd, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

 Duane Burlson/AP
Is it over? Can I open my eyes now? Part of me really doesn’t want to because I know I’d be subjected to the pain of watching this God-awful team play more.
The Mariners, making the Tigers look like the ‘27 Yankees, posted three losses in a row thanks to a 9-4 loss on Thursday […]

The Mariners are taking that “Winning isn’t everything” mantra way too seriously

by @ Thursday, May 22nd, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

The rain started to fall midway through Wednesday night’s game, but it couldn’t wash away the tears on manager John McLaren’s face as the Mariners lost yet another game, 9-4, to the Tigers.
Seattle probably lost it in the third inning when the Detroit, who was already leading 2-1, dropped a seven spot on starter Jarrod Washburn. […]

A moment of silence

by @ Wednesday, May 21st, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

Tuesday night was a battle between the American League’s two worst teams and someone had to win the game. So the Mariners graciously accepted the role of loser and endured nine innings of jail love en route to a 12-8 loss to the Tigers.
Oh, a four-run loss doesn’t sound too bad, you say. It is […]

Say hello to ‘Nuke’ LaLoosh for me

by @ Monday, May 19th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

The official Jeff Clement experiement is now over and Clement, who was brought up from Triple-A Tacoma to fill in for an injured Jose Vidro, is being sent back down.
Hitting .167 with 20 strike outs in 15 games will do that to you.
Not to worry, Jeff. I know exactly how you feel. I, too, know […]

Just one win away from a winning streak

by @ Monday, May 19th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

Two days and two wins in a row. That hasn’t happened for the Mariners since late April. And even then (April 20 and 22) there was a day off between games. But ignoring its past ineptitude, at least for now, Seattle took advantage of the Padres’ anemic offense and won its second straight game, 3-2, […]

Yaaaaawn … wait, there’s a game?

by @ Saturday, May 17th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

Forget getting up on the wrong side of the bed every morning he starts. The Mariners’ Miguel Bautista isn’t even getting out of the bed. At least it felt that way when Bautista gave up three runs in the first inning en route to a 6-4 loss to another pathetic baseball team, the Padres.
For the […]

Mariners continue to find ways to lose

by @ Wednesday, May 14th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

Wow. The only thing more depressing than this season is … no, no, there is nothing more depressing than the Mariners’ season right now. I think even O.J. Simpson is looking at this team and thinking, “Damn, at least I’m not them.”
Seattle lost, yet again, 5-2 to the Rangers, and this game featured everything that […]

Mothers rejoice! Mariners win.

by @ Monday, May 12th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

You couldn’t get a better Mother’s Day gift on Sunday if you were a Mariners fan.
Showing that the team does, in fact, care about its mothers, Seattle snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the White Sox.

Get your life jackets ready

by @ Saturday, May 10th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

The streak is over! OK, so it’s not the losing streak, which everyone wants to end, but the Mariners’ scoreless innings streak ended at 24 during their 4-2 loss to the White Sox.
It’s the equivilent of someone telling the captian of the Titanic that the ship will sink in two hours rather than one. Sure, […]

Seattle Times columnist has lost it

by @ Friday, May 9th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

I guess when the team you cover is as bad as the Mariners, you start to lose your mind. First it’s beat writer Geoff Baker with his doomsday blog headlines. Now it’s columnist Steve Kelley who interviewed Ichiro … well, Ichiro’s bobble head. Yeah.
Commenter Smitty said it best when he wrote, “This is truly the […]

Another wasted start

by @ Thursday, May 8th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

You go with your friends to the bar, the club is packed, the music is great and a cute little number on the other end of the dance floor notices you. Then, just as your perfect night is coming to an end, the girl you’re taking home throws up in your face and you spend the rest […]

Seattle needs a vacation

by @ Wednesday, May 7th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

If Miguel Bautista could make an lolcat, it’d probably be like the one above.
Bautista threw 85 pitches last night … in 2-1/3 innings.
Think about that for a moment. That’s an average of 12 pitchers per out. George Bush’s war strategy is more efficient than this.

A tall task for Balentien and Clement

by @ Tuesday, May 6th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times thinks Wladimir Balentien and Jeff Clement need to step up now. Not in a couple of weeks or in a month. The two rookies need to be contributing members of the Mariners now or risk certain death.
At least, that’s the tone of Mr. Baker’s blog post on Seattle’s newest […]

A big league win Cinco de Mayo style

by @ Tuesday, May 6th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

On Cinco de Mayo, of all days, the Mariners gave their fans something to celebrate. Seattle has broken their five-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over Texas and they no longer have to share the title of “Worst in the West.”

No one can wipe away his stunning smile

by @ Monday, May 5th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

Carlos Silva won’t hide his pearly whites, even in the face of an awful pithcing performance. No, that’s not him after yesterday’s 8-2 loss, but Silva did have an answer for the Mariner’s current woes.

The season is over

by @ Saturday, May 3rd, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

It’s probably too early to throw up the white flag but that doesn’t mean tthe fans or journalist can’t be extremely negative. Like Geoff Baker from the Seattle Times. In his latest blog post he essentially went off on the Mariners after their pathetic 5-1 loss to the Yankees.

In this league hit, field, throw

*from Dan’s Tee Ball Season by kevin.devin on flickr
Little Dan can’t be much older than six but he is sure to understand one thing: people clap and cheer for you when you field the ball cleanly. And if something makes people clap and cheer, then it’s a good thing.
This concept has totally gone over […]

Role for Reed?

by @ Thursday, February 28th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

According to Mariner manager John McLaren, once promising outfield prospect Jeremy Reed is not a candidate to spell right fielder Brad Wilkerson, McLaren prefers a right hand hitter in that role. Reed, however is expected to compete for 1 of 2 reserve outfield positions on the roster.

Mariner interested in Barry Bonds?

by @ Tuesday, February 26th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

Could the Mariners have some interest in adding Barry Bonds? Recent speculation around the certain future Hall of Famer indicates Tampa Bay, St. Louis and somelike like Seattle could sign Bonds to a 1-year deal low-base salary laced with performance incentives. IF Seattle truly has interest, many issue would need to be addressed; where would […]

McLaren names rotation…

by @ Monday, February 25th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

The Tacoma News Tribune is reporting that manager John McLaren has named his 2008 starting rotation. Baring any unforseen injuries or set-backs the rotation is deep, talented, and impressive: Erik Bedard, Felix Hernandez, Carlos Silva, Jarrod Washburn, and Miguel Batista.

Dave Neihaus Hall of Fame Bound

by @ Monday, February 25th, 2008. Filed under 2008 Mariners

Legendary Seattle Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus is going into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Niehaus is the 2008 winner of the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcast excellence. He will be honored during the Hall of Fame induction ceremony July 27, at Cooperstown, N.Y. The announcement. Niehaus worked with the California Angels from 1969-1976 and […]
